Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR)
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics. Known honourably as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into the Opening Ceremony of local competitions, and into Special Olympics Provincial, National, Regional and World Games. Worldwide annually, more than 97,000 dedicated and compassionate law enforcement members carry the “Flame of Hope,” symbolizing courage and celebration of diversity uniting communities around the globe.
The LETR for Special Olympics engages law enforcement worldwide championing acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, starting first with their own communities. Over the years the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms to include Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops, NHL Alumni Games, Torch Rides, Endurance Series and MORE! Since inception (1987 in Ontario), the LETR has raised more than $40,000,000 and changed millions of attitudes.
All funds raised through Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run events are directed into program support that directly affects all community Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) programs. Funds are then put into community programs and help pay for various expenses including: games travel, accommodations, meals, staff support to the field, grants to new community programs, volunteer and athlete training, administration and information/promotional materials and development initiatives like the ‘School Program’ which opens up opportunities to new athletes. It’s important to have one provincial fundraiser that helps SOO create an “equitable” playing field. At SOO, small programs, large programs, big cities and small communities are treated with the same level of importance. The development of Special Olympics Ontario is directly related to the success of the Torch Run.

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Ontario
GSPS LETR Polar Plunge hosts its annual Polar plunge in efforts to raise funds for Special Olympic Athletes.
The Polar Plunge takes place each year at the Ramsey lake Boat Launch (weather permitting).
This event is age and family friendly – all community members are welcome to come and participate and / or cheer on the plungers who have raised funds!
This event showcases the efforts GSPS has brought forth annually in its attempts to connect with and raise funds for the Special Olympians in our community.

2912 Sudbury Irish Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp
The Sudbury Irish Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps was founded in 1973. In that time, 2912 has been recognized as one of the strongest units in Ontario, as is evident by our winning the Lord Strathcona Shield for top unit in Northern Ontario on 17 occasions, and our winning the Colonel John H.C. Clarry trophy for most effective Army Cadet Corps in all of Canada on five separate occasions.

Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember
The Ride to Remember – Memorial Tour is an annual event whereby 200 police officers depart from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, ON and cycle 730km over the course of 4 days, arriving on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, ON in time to participate in the Canadian Police & Peace Officers Memorial Service.
Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service have participated in this event for the past three years.
The goals of the Ride to Remember are to remember the officers that were killed in the line of duty, support those officers’ families, friends and colleagues, raise funds & awareness for the memorial services, and give back to our communities through bicycle donations to under-serviced children and youth in each community the ride passes through.
In 2024 the ride raised money for the National Police and Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund, the Ontario Police Officers’ Memorial Fund, the OPC Path of Honour and Camp FACES. 100% of those funds were used to maintain the memorials, assist with the cost of the memorial services and provide
programming and support for the families of our fallen brothers and sisters.
Participating members including R/Sgt. Joanne Whitten, R/Sgt. Sharon O’Brian, R/Sgt. Dana Kiviaho and Cst. Kevin Powell have proudly represented the Greater Sudbury Police Service through countless personal connections with other police officers, families of law enforcement, community partners, and members of the public between Aylmer, ON and Ottawa, ON. Additionally, members participating in this event have always met their colleagues on Parliament Hill and participated in the National Police and Peace Officers Memorial.
